THIS VERSION OF MINECART MADNESS WAS MADE IN A COUPLE OF HOURS USING PICO-8 FOR MINI-JAM 73. FOR THE FULL, IN-DEVELOPMENT VERSION OF THE GAME, CLICK HERE.

Minecart Madness is an unfaithful recreation of the Donkey Kong Country level 'Mine Cart Carnage," made for Mini-Jam 73. I didn't originally plan on participating this week, but was inspired after playing through this level early Sunday morning.

The original level is difficult, requiring players to jump their mine carts over a variety of fast-approaching obstacles including broken down mine carts, incoming carts containing kremlings, and holes in the track. Both Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong can ride in the carts, although Diddy Kong has been cut from this version as his red hat pushed the number of colours on-screen at any given time over the limit.

For your gaming displeasure:

  • Levels are randomly generated
  • Enemies are erratic
  • Hit-boxes are broken
  • There is no sound

Some of these things are due to laziness on my part, and some of them are to emulate the feeling of consistently failing to clear levels in DKC at 4 in the morning.

The game doesn't start when I press c or x ):

A good pico game, I know how limited coding in that engine is so I'll just point out that ennemies are too fast and the broken hitboxes are making the game really hard

Random path with giant curves; Enemies go stupid fast, and always show up just in time to force a jump into the void; Nostalgic perfection, lol.

About Diddy's hat though, you could have shared the same red as the enemy's eyes.
